What do you do?
I write. Mainly books, sometimes other things too. Novels and essays, for the most part. The latest one tells the story of a nineteenth-century inventor, Walter Hunt, a forgotten genius. Alongside his life, I recount a journey I took following in his footsteps. For many years I worked as a copywriter in the fields of art and design, and it's a job I still enjoy because it's so different from “pure” writing. You have to engage different parts of your brain, strip things down, work to tight deadlines, and interpret other people's needs. Unlike writing books, which often forces you into solitude, copywriting keeps you in touch with the world, and every now and then that's no bad thing.
When and how did you start?
I came to fiction on my own, and a little by chance. I started writing books while living in France, where I spent many years. The first ones were essays connected to painting; only later did I move into fiction. Looking back, I realise that everything I write is quite visual in one way or another, books full of images, really.
Your super power?
A certain optimism, I think. I believe that in life, if you try to do the things you really want to do, you'll end up better off than if you decide not to try at all. Maybe it's not even optimism, maybe it's determination? I don't know. I'm not sure what the right name for it is, or whether it even counts as a superpower, but I do know that over the years that instinct has been very useful to me.
What inspires you?
Things that are where you wouldn't expect to find them, or that turn out to be different from how you imagined them. Unlikely encounters, plants growing in inhospitable places, sentences in books, words written on walls, names on doorbells, strange coincidences, the shape of certain objects, amusing resemblances. I'm not sure they inspire me, actually, but both in my work and in life, these are often the kinds of things that save me.
Next project.
Moving to another city for a year (in theory, starting in September, but I'm still working on it). We'll see whether my superpower comes through for me this time as well...
Favorite time of the day.
For writing, definitely the morning, not too early, let's say between half past nine and noon.
For swimming, as soon as I wake up, immediately, right before coffee.
For spending time with someone I care about: lunch. I find having lunch with someone far more intimate than having dinner together. The world around you feels more intact, more distracted. The whole afternoon still lies ahead. I don't know, there's a purity to lunch that dinner lacks.
How important are colors in your life?
So much so that I ended up writing a book about it. It's called Proust. I colori del Tempo, an illustrated work of literary criticism. Let's say the excuse was to write about the chromatic motifs in Proust's Recherche. But what really interested me was studying colours themselves, their history, their ambiguities, and the meanings they carry with them. That's one of the best things about my job. You can take something that fascinates you and dive all the way into it.
What's the last new thing you did?
Colouring stones with felt-tip pens at the beach this afternoon with my daughter. Or maybe I used to do it as a child too, and had just forgotten?
Speaking of clothes: what comes first? Shape, colous, touch or mood?
All of those things together. It's like standing in front of a painting, or meeting a person: first you're struck by the whole, then you start noticing the individual details. In general, what fascinates me most about clothes is that they're not inanimate objects at all. They have a mind of their own, they do as they please, and they change enormously depending on what's happening outside the window, or on how you're feeling.
Do you have a life-saving uniform?
Nothing original at all: jeans and a striped shirt. Stripes are a lifesaver. Maybe that's why they're the uniform of sailors?
Let's destroy a myth about knitwear.
That it's necessarily something for sciure. Or that it's a “casual” choice (which is an adjective I happen to detest).

COSA FAI?
Scrivo. Romanzi e saggi, perlopiù. L’ultimo è la storia di un inventore dell’800, Walter Hunt: racconto la sua vita di genio dimenticato, e in parallelo la storia di un viaggio fatto sulle sue tracce. A lungo ho lavorato copywriter nel campo dell’arte e del design, ed è un mestiere che ancora oggi mi piace fare perché diverso dalla scrittura “pura”, devi attivare altre aree del cervello, andare per sottrazione, con tempi stretti, interpretare i bisogni degli altri. Diversamente dalla scrittura, poi, che ti costringe a isolarti, fare la copy è un mestiere che ti tiene in contatto col mondo, e anche quello alle volte male non fa.
QUANDO E COME HAI INIZIATO?
Alla narrativa sono arrivata da sola, e un po’ per caso. A scrivere libri invece ho iniziato in Francia, dove ho vissuto a lungo: i primi libri erano saggi legati alla pittura, solo dopo sono arrivata alla narrativa. In generale, guardandoli da fuori, mi rendo conto che tutto quello che scrivo è sempre piuttosto “visivo”: libri pieni di immagini, insomma.
IL TUO SUPER POTERE?
Un certo ottimismo, credo. Penso che nella vita, se uno prova a fare le cose che desidera molto, gli andrà comunque meglio che se invece decide di non provarci. Forse non è neanche ottimismo, piuttosto determinazione? Boh, non so che nome ha di preciso, non so nemmeno se è un super potere, ma so che nel corso degli anni quell'istinto lì mi è stato molto utile.
COSA TI ISPIRA?
Le cose che stanno dove uno non si aspetterebbe di trovarle o sono diverse da come uno se le era immaginate. Incontri improbabili, piante che spuntano in posti impervi, frasi nei libri, scritte sui muri, nomi sui citofoni, coincidenze bizzarre, la forma di certe oggetti, somiglianze buffe. Non so se mi ispirano, in realtà, di certo però spesso sia nel lavoro che nella vita mi salvano questo tipo di cose qui.
IL TUO PROSSIMO PROGETTO.
Spostarmi per un anno in un'altra città (in teoria da settembre, ma ci sto ancora lavorando, vediamo se il super-potere mi assiste anche stavolta...).
IL TUO MOMENTO PREFERITO DELLA GIORNATA.
Per scrivere senza dubbio la mattina, non troppo presto, diciamo tra le nove e mezza e mezzogiorno. Per nuotare, appena sveglia, ma proprio subito, appena prima del caffè. Per uscire con una persona a cui tengo: a pranzo. Trovo molto più intimo pranzare insieme a qualcuno che non andarci a cena. Il mondo intorno è più intatto, più distratto. C'è tutto il pomeriggio davanti. Non so, nel pranzo c'è una purezza che nella cena manca.
QUANTO SONO IMPORTANTI I COLORI NELLA TUA VITA?
Così tanto che ci ho scritto un libro, si chiama Proust. I colori del Tempo, è un saggio illustrato di critica letteraria: diciamo che la scusa era parlare dei rimandi cromatici nella Recherche di Proust. Ma in fondo quello che mi interessava era studiare i colori, appunto: la loro storia, le ambivalenze e i significati che si portano dietro. È una delle cose belle del mio lavoro, prendere una cosa che ti interessa e sprofondarci dentro.
QUAL È L'ULTIMA COSA NUOVA CHE HAI FATTO?
Colorare dei sassi coi pennarelli, oggi pomeriggio al mare, insieme a mia figlia. O forse l'avevo già fatto io da piccola e me l'ero dimenticata?
A PROPOSITO DI VESTITI: COSA VIENE PRIMA? FORMA, COLORE, CONSISTENZA o UMORE?
Tutte queste cose insieme. È come quando ti trovi davanti un quadro o a una persona: prima ti colpisce l'insieme, poi noti i singoli dettagli. In generale, la cosa che più mi affascina dei vestiti è che non è affatto vero che sono oggetti inanimati: vogliono dire la loro, fanno come gli pare e cambiano moltissimo in base a quello che succede fuori dalla finestra o a come ti senti tu.
HAI UNA DIVISA SALVAVITA?
Banalissima: jeans e maglia a righe. Le righe sono una salvezza: forse per questo sono la divisa dei marinai?
SFATIAMO UN MITO SULLA MAGLIERIA.
Che sia per forza una cosa da sciure. O una scelta "casual" (aggettivo peraltro detestabile).
