Viola & Paolo

SAY HI TO VIOLA, PAOLO
AND MONTY

Tell us about you, and a little bit about your life...how you met?

P: We met inside a book, which was inside a studio, which was in Milan.
V: Paolo's opening line will remain famous: "How do you say corkscrew in French?"

Any daily / family routine? (Breakfast, mindfulness, whatever)

P&V: Saturday morning breakfast in bed and walk in Vetra with Monty.

About your work and the best/worse part of it.

P: The best part of my job is when I start a new story and I have to find the characters. There are a lot of possibilities, everything is open. The worst part is when that job is done, when everything is closed.
V: The best part? Working with stories. No day is the same as another, you can't get bored. And then knowing that that book - to which you contribute in a tiny tiny part - could become important for someone.

Favorite time of the day.

P: When on a fall evening I come home running on my bicycle, the bakery is still open for the focaccia, I enter the house, Monty welcomes me and I smell the lentil soup that Viola is preparing. That's heaven!
V: In the evening. Paolo and I squashed on one half of the sofa and Monty on the other.

Last thing you did for the first time.

P: Going together to La Scala to see Boris Godunov, without falling asleep.
V: These pictures and this interview.

Milano vs Veneto.

P: It's hard to imagine one without the other. If I hadn't grown up in Veneto I wouldn't see Milan with the same eyes. And, if I didn't live in Milan, I couldn't do this beautiful and fun thing of escaping with Viola and Monty in Veneto and spending a few weekends in Molina (Molina anagram of Milano).
V: Veneto is where I grew up, Milan has become my home.

Any fav spot in Milan? For a walk or for a drawing session ...

P: It is weel-known that the thing I like most to draw in Milan is Torre Velasca.
V: Descend along the Naviglio grande, cross the park and rejoin the Naviglio Pavese at Chiuse di Leonardo.

Fav comics, books and must-see exhibitions or museums

P: Buddha by Osamu Tezuka, I promessi Sposi, Galleria Borghese
V: Princess Maison manga, Steinbeck's Eden Valley, The Museum of Statue Stele in Pontremoli.

Which is the story behind your favourite piece of clothing?

P: In a charity shop in Kensington I bought a corduroy jacket that fit me perfectly and I wore it until it fell apart.
V: A vintage, white and blue printed dress, with a lace collar. It was given to me by a neighbor when I was in college. I wore it with cowgirl boots. My twenties in a dress.

About clothing... What comes first? Shape, touch, colors, mood...

P: Shape, touch and color in that order. And I would also add the smell.
V: The touch sensation and then the color. This is why I love Sartoria Vico.

Do you have a safe “uniform”? What makes you feel good?

P: My work doesn't impose any kind of uniform on me, but the one I've been dreaming of for a long time and I've finally got is the perfect uniform for an elderly Milanese man: the Loden coat.
V: A Liberty print men's cotton pijamas. It's not a uniform, but in terms of hours it's the thing I wear the most!

How long have you known Sartoria Vico?

P: I know Sartoria Vico even before it was Sartoria Vico, when Cristina and Stefania were still "dissociate". We shared Booh Stoodio here in Milan in the early 2000s. Even then, seeing them knit, you could tell they were serious.
V:
I know Sartoria Vico since I've known Paolo, it's now 12 years.

Describe Sartoria Vico in a few words.

P: A unique way of combining the abstraction of ideas with the concreteness of matter.
V: Feminine, colorful, soft, unexpected.

Let’s knock a myth about knitwear

V: More than a myth, let's debunk a prejudice: knitwear looks good on everyone.
P: That's right!

VERSIONE ITALIANA

RACCONTATECI QUALCOSA DI VOI, DELLA VOSTRA VITA... E DOVE VI SIETE CONOSCIUTI.

That’s heaven!
V: La sera.

P: Andare insieme alla Scala a vedere Boris Godunov, senza addormentarsi.
V: Queste foto e questa intervista.

MILANO vs VENETO.

QUALCHE POSTO PREFERITO A MILANO?

COSA VIENE PRIMA? FORMA, TATTO, COLORI, STATI D'ANIMO...
P: Forma, tatto e colore in quest’ordine.

DESCRIVI SARTORIA VICO IN POCHE PAROLE
V: Femminile, colorata, morbida, inaspettata.
