SAY HI TO PIA SOPHIE
Tell us about you, and a little bit about your life and childhood.
I am a ‘Frankfurter Mädchen’, a real city girl. I grew up in Germany as the eldest of three sisters. My childhood was beautiful and privileged, I would walk to school, have my friends live close by, play field hockey and the piano. We would spend most of our summer holidays in Italy, driving along the coast with our Volkswagen-bus from Frankfurt until Puglia or even Sicily, always making local friends wherever we would stop.
My love for art was shaped by my mother who enrolled us to the Städel summer camp from when I was six years old, and who would always take us to museums and galleries in all cities and countries we visited. I went on to study Economics and was lucky enough to meet my good friend Christoffer with whom I founded a student organisation in Copenhagen, connecting business and art - which should be the start of my career in the art world.
I now live in Venice, my favourite place on earth.
Any daily / family routine? (Breakfast, mindfulness, whatever)
The only thing of Italian culture I will most likely never adapt to is the Italian style of breakfast. I always need to have a slice of rye bread with butter and cheese or pâté (as we would call it Leberwurst), eggs or at least Müsli with fruit. I usually do not start to work in the gallery before 10 am, but prefer to get up early, discuss the week with my husband, and take half an hour every morning to read a chapter in a good book or an article in a magazine.
Favorite time of the day
Early mornings, with the first light, the air still fresh from the night and the city still, silent, awaiting the day’s unfolding.
The last new thing you did for the first time
Learning how to row in the Voga Veneta style.
What is your super power?
Confidence in my own abilities.
What do you think of art? The best and the worse part.
For me, art is limitless, it’s shameless, it can be anything and anywhere and doesn’t know boundaries. Art shifts perspectives. It expresses, communicates, shines light on things that need to be seen, told and experienced. And that is also why it is so difficult to put a value on it.
Your next project?
Besides the next two exhibitions in the Venice gallery and the text three artists coming to town before the end of the year, I am also working on two book projects - one which will be a collection of my grandmother’s recipes, the other a more artsy book that I would like not to disclose just yet.
Which is the story behind your favourite piece of clothing?
I am a lucky girl that my sisters and I wear almost the same size as our mother. After her cupboard cleanout twice a year, we are always allowed to choose one or two of the beautiful things she does not want to keep anymore. Right now, my favourite item is a Prada handbag that my mother bought in the 90s. I cherish it very much and have made it into my bag by adding a silk scarf knotted to one side.
Favourite and forbidden colors (on you and around you)
I can always go with a blue pallet - both in winter and summer. It is an elegant as well as sporty colour and goes well with my eye colour. Yellow on the other hand is a no-go for me, it does not go well with my skin tone.
About clothing…What comes first? Shape, touch, colors, mood…
Purpose. I always try to dress for the occasion and therefore often think of shoes and jacket first and build the outfit around it.
Do you have a safe “uniform”?
Dark blue Levi’s jeans, a silk blouse, white sneakers and my beige leather jacket.
What makes you feel good?
A long and lazy Sunday morning on the sofa, still in my comfy pyjamas, with a fresh cup of coffee and looking out into the blue Venetian sky with no plans for the day.

RACCONTACI DI TE E UN PO’ DELLA TUA VITA E DELLA TUA INFANZIA.
Sono una “Frankfurter Mädchen”, una vera ragazza di città. Sono cresciuta in Germania, la maggiore di tre sorelle. La mia infanzia è stata bella e privilegiata, andavo a scuola a piedi, i miei amici vivevano vicino, giocavo a hockey su prato e suonavo il pianoforte. Trascorrevamo la maggior parte delle nostre vacanze estive in Italia, guidando lungo la costa con il nostro pulmino Volkswagen da Francoforte fino alla Puglia o anche alla Sicilia, facendo amicizia ovunque ci fermassimo.
Il mio amore per l’arte è stato plasmato da mia madre che mi ha iscritto al campo estivo Städel da quando avevo sei anni e che ci portava sempre nei musei e nelle gallerie di tutte le città che abbiamo visitato. Ho continuato a studiare Economia e ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare il mio buon amico Christoffer con cui ho fondato un’organizzazione studentesca a Copenaghen, collegando affari e arte - questo è l’inizio della mia carriera nel mondo dell’arte.
Ora vivo a Venezia, il mio posto preferito sulla terra.
HAI UNA ROUTINE QUOTIDIANA/FAMILIARE? (COLAZIONE, MINDFULNESS, QUALUNQUE COSA)
L’unica cosa della cultura italiana a cui molto probabilmente non mi abituerò mai è lo stile della colazione. Io ho sempre bisogno di una fetta di pane di segale con burro e formaggio o paté (per noi Leberwurst), uova o almeno Müsli con la frutta. Di solito non inizio a lavorare nella galleria prima delle 10 del mattino, ma preferisco alzarmi presto, discutere della settimana con mio marito e prendermi mezz’ora ogni mattina per leggere un capitolo di un buon libro o un articolo di una rivista.
MOMENTO PREFERITO DELLA GIORNATA
Al mattino presto, con le prime luci, l’aria ancora fresca della notte e la città immobile, silenziosa, in attesa dello svolgersi della giornata.

Imparare a remare in stile Voga Veneta.
QUAL È IL TUO SUPERPOTERE?
La fiducia nelle mie capacità.
COSA NE PENSI DELL’ARTE? LA PARTE MIGLIORE E QUELLA PEGGIORE.
Per me l’arte è senza limiti, è spudorata, può essere qualsiasi cosa e ovunque e non conosce confini. L’arte sposta le prospettive. Esprime, comunica, illumina le cose che hanno bisogno di essere viste, raccontate e sperimentate. Ed è anche per questo che è così difficile dargli un valore.
IL TUO PROSSIMO PROGETTO?
Oltre alle prossime due mostre nella galleria di Venezia e i prossimi tre artisti che arriveranno in città entro la fine dell’anno, sto anche lavorando a due progetti di libri, uno che sarà una raccolta delle ricette di mia nonna, l’altro è un libro più artistico di cui non vorrei ancora svelare nulla.
QUAL È LA STORIA DIETRO IL TUO CAPO PREFERITO?
Sono fortunata, sia io che le mie sorelle indossiamo quasi la stessa taglia di nostra madre. Dopo la pulizia dell’armadio due volte l’anno, possiamo sempre scegliere una o due bellissime cose che non vuole più conservare. In questo momento, il mio pezzo preferito è una borsa Prada acquistata da mia madre negli anni ‘90. Mi piace molto e la indosso aggiungendo una sciarpa di seta annodata su un lato.
COLORI PREFERITI E PROIBITI (SU DI TE E INTORNO A TE)
Scelgo sempre una palette di blu, sia in inverno che in estate. È un colore elegante e insieme sportivo ed è il colore che si sposa bene con quello dei miei occhi. Il giallo invece è un colore “no” per me, non sta bene con la mia carnagione.
A PROPOSITO DI ABBIGLIAMENTO... COSA VIENE PRIMA? FORMA, TATTO, COLORI, STATO D’ANIMO...
La funzione. Cerco sempre di vestirmi in modo adatto all’occasione e quindi penso spesso a scarpe e giacca prima e costruisco l’outfit intorno a loro.
HAI UN’UNIFORME SICURA?
Levi’s blu scuri, blusa di seta, sneakers bianche e il mio giubbotto di pelle beige.
COSA TI FA STARE BENE?
Una lunga e pigra domenica mattina sul divano, ancora in pigiama, con una tazza fresca di caffè, guardando il cielo azzurro veneziano senza programmi per la giornata.

SFATIAMO UN MITO SULLA MAGLIERIA
Quella che è ampiamente conosciuta come la maledizione del maglione è riconosciuta come una superstizione, eppure ci credono in molti. Dice che se inizi a lavorare ad un maglione per qualsiasi uomo per cui hai un interesse romantico, romperà con te prima che il maglione sia finito. —Alcuni knitters che conosco affermano che la maledizione funziona anche con le sciarpe.—
