SAY HI TO SARA
Tell us something about yourself: where you come from, where you’re going. What do you do? When and how did you start?
I was born in Tehran and grew up in the Netherlands since the age of one. I attended school in the dreamy town of Delft and currently live in Amsterdam. My daily occupation is UX design at Philips. I’ve always loved anything design-related, including interior and textile design, fashion, and old and new technologies. For some years now, I have spent my evenings illustrating, that is, when our two kids are asleep. I’ve used these illustrations recently to amplify the voices of the Iranian people.
One thing we should know about you.
As a child, I always had an eye for the quality of materials. Whether it was choosing new shoes or selecting a dining table for our home with my parents, I appreciated aesthetic and durable qualities. So, I can be extremely picky about selecting clothes or objects for our house.
Your favorite time of the day
The late evening when the whole world is quiet. As I write this, it’s 10:47 pm. During these moments, distractions are minimal, and it’s the only time I’m able to pursue my passion for illustration.
Your comfort food
My ultimate comfort food is ‘zereshkpolo’, an Iranian dish of rice with chicken, saffron, and barberries. It’s pretty simple to prepare, but the sweet and sour taste is divine. Add some sprinkles of pistachios and almonds and there’s nothing else you need in the world.
What would you never give up?
I would never give up a life dedicated to creativity. Whether it’s illustration, home decoration, thinking about color palettes, or curating outfits: a life surrounded by art and beauty.
A wish to be fulfilled
I’ve made visual stories that I would love to publish. Another wish that is close to my heart is to live to see a free Iran, to visit my homeland, to introduce my children to my birthplace, and to reunite with my family.
Do you collect anything?
I collect anything that’s blue, especially blue decorations. My collection includes various blue vases and some Delft Blue plates.
How important are colors in your life? Do you have any rules about this? Where does the passion / obsession for BLUE come from?
Colors play a significant role in my life. My golden rule is to surround yourself with colors that bring joy. Even if you prefer a more muted wardrobe, for example, you can incorporate colors through accessories like socks, shoe ties, or earrings. It can be subtle. In my case, I’ve surrounded myself with the color blue in everything I do. Our house is decorated with blue walls and our car is blue. I dress in blue and even make my PowerPoint presentations in blue. The color blue soothes me and calms me down, but I can also wear it to express myself and feel joyful. It all started unexpectedly during a dinner at a friend’s house, where I was captivated by a cobalt blue bottle on the table. Our friend gifted me the bottle and this marked the beginning of my love for the color, leading to my blue collection.
How do you choose/feel the other colors?
I use cobalt blue as my foundation and consider it my ‘neutral’ color. I then look for color combinations that complement blue, such as red, pink, white, lilac, baby blue, and gold. This approach also guides my interior design choices, and I draw inspiration from any possible source I encounter, from images of nature to the streets of Amsterdam.
Speaking of clothes: What comes first? Shape, colours, touch or mood?
Typically, color comes first in my clothing choices because the garment needs to fit my established color palette and existing wardrobe. Material and shape are secondary, and my mood often influences the final decision. For example, this year my preference for dresses shifted to pants and sets.

Let’s destroy a false myth about knitwear
Knitwear is anything but dull! It may have been previously linked to the image of grandmothers knitting old-fashioned clothes. However, the world of knitwear is incredibly versatile, offering boundless opportunities for textures and colors.

RACCONTACI QUALCOSA DI TE: DA DOVE VIENI, DOVE STAI ANDANDO. COSA FAI? QUANDO E COME HAI INIZIATO?
Sono nata a Teheran e cresciuta nei Paesi Bassi dall’età di un anno. Ho frequentato la scuola nella meravigliosa città di Delft e attualmente vivo ad Amsterdam. La mia occupazione quotidiana è la progettazione UX presso Philips. Ho sempre amato tutto ciò che riguarda il design, compreso il design di interni e tessile, la moda e le vecchie e nuove tecnologie. Da qualche anno passo le serate a illustrare, mentre i nostri due bambini dormono. Recentemente ho utilizzato queste illustrazioni per amplificare la voce del popolo iraniano.
UNA COSA CHE DOVREMMO SAPERE DI TE
Fin da bambina ho sempre avuto un occhio di riguardo per la qualità dei materiali. Che si trattasse di scegliere scarpe nuove o di scegliere un tavolo da pranzo per la nostra casa con i miei genitori, ho sempre apprezzato l’estetica e la qualità. Quindi posso essere estremamente esigente nella scelta dei vestiti o degli oggetti per la nostra casa.
IL TUO MOMENTO PREFERITO DELLA GIORNATA
La tarda sera in cui il mondo intero si ferma. Mentre scrivo questo, sono le 22:47. Durante questi momenti, le distrazioni sono minime ed è l’unica occasione in cui riesco a coltivare la mia passione per l’illustrazione.
IL TUO COMFORT FOOD
Il mio massimo comfort food è lo “zereshkpolo”, un piatto iraniano di riso con pollo, zafferano e bacche di crespino. È piuttosto semplice da preparare, ma il gusto agrodolce è divino. Aggiungi qualche spolverata di pistacchi e mandorle e non c’è nient’altro di cui hai bisogno al mondo.
A COSA NON RINUNCERESTI MAI?
Ad una vita dedicata alla creatività. Che si tratti di illustrazione, decorazione della casa, ideazione di palette colori o di outfit: una vita circondata da arte e bellezza.
UN DESIDERIO DA ESAUDIRE
Ho realizzato alcune storie visive che mi piacerebbe pubblicare. Un altro desiderio che mi sta a cuore è vivere abbastanza da vedere un Iran libero, visitare la mia terra natale, presentare ai miei figli il mio luogo di nascita e ricongiungermi con la mia famiglia.
COLLEZIONI QUALCOSA?
Colleziono tutto ciò che è blu, soprattutto decorazioni blu. La mia collezione comprende diversi vasi blu e alcune ceramiche di Delft.
QUANTO SONO IMPORTANTI I COLORI NELLA TUA VITA? HAI QUALCHE REGOLA A RIGUARDO? DA DOVE NASCE LA TUA PASSIONE/OSSESSIONE PER IL BLU?
I colori giocano un ruolo significativo nella mia vita. La mia regola d’oro è circondarsi di colori che mettono allegria. Anche se sei per un guardaroba più sobrio, ad esempio, puoi usare accenti di colori attraverso accessori come calzini, cravatte o orecchini. Può essere un uso discreto. Nel mio caso, mi sono circondata del colore blu in tutto ciò che faccio. La nostra casa è decorata con pareti blu e la nostra macchina è blu. Mi vesto di blu e faccio anche le mie presentazioni PowerPoint in blu. Il colore blu mi rilassa e mi calma, ma posso anche indossarlo per esprimermi e sentirmi felice. Tutto è iniziato inaspettatamente durante una cena a casa di un amico: sono rimasta affascinata da una bottiglia blu cobalto posata sul tavolo. Il nostro amico mi ha regalato la bottiglia e questo ha segnato l’inizio del mio amore per questo colore, che ha portato alla mia collezione blu.
COME SCEGLI/SENTI GLI ALTRI COLORI?
Utilizzo il blu cobalto come base, lo considero il mio colore “neutro”. Cerco quindi combinazioni di colori che completino il blu, come rosso, rosa, bianco, lilla, celeste e oro. Questo approccio guida anche le mie scelte di interior design e traggo ispirazione da ogni possibile fonte che incontro, dalle immagini della natura alle strade di Amsterdam.
A PROPOSITO DI VESTITI: COSA VIENE PRIMA? FORMA, COLORI, TATTO O UMORE?
In genere, nelle mie scelte di abbigliamento il colore viene prima perché il capo deve adattarsi alla mia palette colori e al mio guardaroba. Materiale e forma sono secondari e spesso il mio umore influenza la decisione finale. Ad esempio, quest’anno la mia preferenza per gli abiti si è spostata su pantaloni e completi.
SARTORIA VICO IN POCHE PAROLE
Indossare Sartoria Vico è stata un’esperienza deliziosa. Dal momento in cui ho scartato il pacco e ho osservato i capi, ho capito che erano di alta qualità. Sartoria Vico è come quel compagno morbido e confortante in cui ti avvolgi durante le fredde giornate invernali.
DISTRUGGIAMO UN FALSO MITO SULLA MAGLIERIA
La maglieria è tutt’altro che noiosa! Potrebbe sembrare legata all’immagine delle nonne che sferruzzavano abiti vecchio stile. Invece il mondo della maglieria è incredibilmente versatile e offre infinite opportunità di texture e colori.
